Episode 135: “My Crocs Stay in 4x” with Joshua ‘Strotnium’ David

Joshua’s story might be every kid’s dream: he was kicked out of high school, joined the U.S. Army, became a Ranger. Then went to Selection and became a Green Beret where he handled a MPC named Timo for two deployments. Joshua then tried out for the new Army eSports team. Out of 16,000 applicants, they took 16 for the team, and he was one of them. Joshua went from real life sniper, to professional video game sniper (yeah, think Halo, CoD, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, League of Legends, live-streaming on Twitch…!), and he’s now headed back to USASOC. Tune in to this unique episode to hear about how Joshua uses live-streaming as outreach in today’s day and age. Neat stuff! And be sure to follow him at @strotnium

Episode 133: Dead duck, crazy ants and mongooses, oh my! With Conservation Dogs of Hawaii
Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Ted sits down with Kyoko Johnson, lead K9 instructor and trainer, and Michelle Reynolds, PHD and lead science advisor, to talk about their awesome conservation programs in Hawaii. Ted does this episode SOLO as Eric is recovering from COVID (get better) – but this take on working dogs (and rats?!) is one you won’t want to miss!
Conservation Dogs of Hawaiʻi (CDH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. CDH facilitates the research and use of ecological detection dogs in the Hawaiian archipelago. Their mission is to utilize the extraordinary olfactory abilities of dogs to:
Detect invasive species to mitigate their impact on wildlife and the ecosystems of Hawaii, and
Detect endangered species for research and conservation purposes.
In addition to conducting field surveys with their professional dog/handler teams, CDH trains volunteer pet dog/handler teams who conduct field work or contribute to data gathering and feasibility assessments through pilot projects.
So sit down, listen up, and learn a thing or two about how biologists are using canine sniffers to do some pretty cool conservation work! Check out their awesome work at @conservationdogshawaii

Episode 132: TEDD Dogs with Jason Dutton
Podcast: Play in new window | Download

What was getting your first K9 like? The good, the bad, and the ugly; we get into it with this episode!
Your WDR Hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with a former Army Tactical Explosive Detection Dog (TEDD) handler, current Police K9 officer in upstate South Carolina and owner of Carolina Canine Academy, Jason Dutton.
The gents talk with Dutton about his time going from never having handled or trained a K9 before, to becoming a TEDD handler, then going to Von Liche Kennels and K2 for training with his dog. Dutton talks about the the start of (and shortcomings of) that program, and what his experience was like training with his dog. Dutton’s job was to lead patrols in Afghanistan and search for IEDs, but he found out his dog had Canine PTSD from a IED blast, which affected his dog’s ability to work. He also shares the story of his first deployment going on patrol outside the wire; not just as U.S. Army asset, but as a NATO asset, and he got to work with Polish Special Forces.
Canine isn’t all sex and rock and roll, there can be an underbelly to it, and Dutton was not shy to hit on some of the hard topics with our hosts. You won’t want to miss this!

Episode 131: MAGA with David Rivera

Are good quality K9s becoming more difficult to find?
Your WDR Hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, are honored to sit down with Air Force veteran and current K9 handler in New Canaan, Connecticut, David Rivera of Black Rock Canines, (which is a large importing kennel @BlackrockK9s and BlackRockCanines.com)
The gents talk about the challenges of K9 supply & demand, buying dogs, future green dog sales, availability (or lack thereof) of dogs, the price of K9s, knowing your clients, and how a new 501c3 could change the way departments get dogs (keep reading!!)
Healthy, genetically-tested, U.S.A-bred dogs are hard to find. Dogs from other nations are often procured and deployed by the military and law enforcement at significant cost, only to find that their temperaments or preventable illnesses render these dogs unsuitable for service. Rivera founded Black Rock Canines to solve these challenges by establishing the first large-scale breeding program of high-performing, healthy, genetically-tested working dogs, service dogs, and pets in the U.S.A.
Rivera also started a foundation called American Detection Dog Foundation whose mission is to establish and run a working dog breeding/raising program in the United States. Please consider donating to the GoFundMe below; your donations will go directly to the raising of detection dogs right here in the United States of America (If you can’t donate, be sure to follow them, and like/share/repost to help them get the word out there!)
