Eric and Ted are joined by Krista Smith, the founder of Harlow’s Heroes, a nonprofit organization that supports retired and current canines. Krista shares her personal story of domestic violence and how her dog, Barrett, provided comfort and inspiration. She explains how Barrett’s legacy led her to start Harlow’s Heroes and discusses the organization’s mission and goals. Harlow’s Heroes is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports retired K9 units by providing them with medical care, nutritional support, and other resources. They also bridge the gap between K9 handlers and the community by educating the public about the dogs’ capabilities and clearing up misconceptions. Harlow’s Heroes offers free photo shoots for current K9 teams to capture their working moments and create lasting memories. They also raise funds for protective and training equipment for active K9 units. The organization advocates for legislation that recognizes the value of K9 units and provides restitution for injured or killed dogs. In this conversation, Krista from Harlow’s Heroes discusses her organization’s mission to support K9 units and their handlers. We touch on Bill’s class, O-O-D-A Loop, or Observe-Orient-Decide-Act. This js a situational awareness tool used by the Military, Police, and Business to teach how to quickly process information and then act on the best information you have. the challenges faced by handlers in different scenarios, such as explosives detection and narcotics detection. We talk about the differences between training working dogs and pet dogs, as well as the growing interest in pet detection training. We also discuss the role of corrections in training and the unique characteristics of civilian handlers.⁣
