Ted sits down with Kyoko Johnson, lead K9 instructor and trainer, and Michelle Reynolds, PHD and lead science advisor, to talk about their awesome conservation programs in Hawaii. Ted does this episode SOLO as Eric is recovering from COVID (get better) – but this take on working dogs (and rats?!) is one you won’t want to miss!
Conservation Dogs of Hawaiʻi (CDH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. CDH facilitates the research and use of ecological detection dogs in the Hawaiian archipelago. Their mission is to utilize the extraordinary olfactory abilities of dogs to:
Detect invasive species to mitigate their impact on wildlife and the ecosystems of Hawaii, and
Detect endangered species for research and conservation purposes.
In addition to conducting field surveys with their professional dog/handler teams, CDH trains volunteer pet dog/handler teams who conduct field work or contribute to data gathering and feasibility assessments through pilot projects.
So sit down, listen up, and learn a thing or two about how biologists are using canine sniffers to do some pretty cool conservation work! Check out their awesome work at @conservationdogshawaii
